The city of Independence, OR, is located in Polk County, on the west bank of the Willamette River along Oregon Route 51. As part of the Salem metropolitan area, Independence covers 2.7 square miles of land with a population of roughly 8,700 people.
The community was founded by pioneers who migrated from Independence, Missouri, and the new Oregon city was incorporated in 1874. Independence thrived as a boat and rail shipping point for agriculture and lumber until the 1950s, and the Independence State Airport was dedicated in 1964. Today a total of 30 square blocks of the oldest part of town form the Independence Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
